MRH heart surgeon set for next program in Reid Heart Center series

PINEHURST – A heart surgeon with the FirstHealth Cardiovascular & Thoracic Center will talk about issues related to quality performance during the fourth in a series of five programs highlighting the services of the Reid Heart Center: The FirstHealth Cardiac & Vascular Institute.

Art Edgerton, M.D., will be the featured speaker for the Thursday, June 9, program called “Shopping for Quality Heart Surgery: What Hospitals Measure and Why.” He plans to talk about how and why FirstHealth measures quality performance and how that impacts patient selection, outcomes and performance improvements efforts. He will also address public reporting and pay-for-performances issues.
The program will get under way at 6 p.m. in the Reid Heart Center, which is located at 120 Page Road North, between Highway 211 and Memorial Drive, on the campus of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
A native North Carolinian, Dr. Edgerton came to FirstHealth last fall after spending much of his professional life in the Charlotte area. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wake Forest University and his medical degree from the Bowman Gray (now Wake Forest) School of Medicine.
He completed a general surgery residency and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Before joining FirstHealth’s heart-care team, he was associated with Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C., where he started the cardiothoracic surgery program in 1997.
Dr. Edgerton’s surgical specialties include coronary artery bypass, valvular heart surgery, lung surgery and carotid endarterectomy. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
The fifth and final program in the Reid Heart Center Series will be held Thursday, June 30, and will feature Peter Ellman, M.D. Dr. Ellman, who will speak on “Valve Disease – So You Think You Have a Heart Murmur,” is also a heart surgeon at the FirstHealth Cardiovascular & Thoracic Center.
