ROCKINGHAM – Two OB/GYN specialists from the FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Women’s Center will be featured in the 2011 Just for You Annual Women’s Series at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Angela Morrison, M.D., will speak on “Incontinence and Overactive Bladder” during the program to be held on Tuesday, April 12, while Mohamed Ibrahim, M.D., will discuss “Osteoporosis” on Tuesday, April 19.

Each program will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s cafeteria. The Annual Women’s Series is sponsored by the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation, which supports FirstHealth services for the residents of Richmond County.

During her April 12 presentation, Dr. Morrison will talk about the different types of incontinence and how they can be treated.

“Millions of women experience the involuntary loss of urine called urinary incontinence,” Dr. Morrison says. “The condition can be slightly annoying or, in extreme cases, socially debilitating. Treatment can range from relatively simple exercises and medications to biofeedback, nerve stimulation and surgery. During the upcoming Women’s Series presentation, we will discuss the various causes of and solutions for this problem.”

Dr. Morrison’s portion of the program will be preceded by a Zumba demonstration by Cheryl Brady of the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness-Richmond. Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that has become the world’s most successful aerobic workout. Several classes are currently offered at the Center for Health & Fitness-Richmond.

During his presentation on April 19, Dr. Ibrahim will discuss how osteoporosis affects millions of post-menopausal American women, including many who don’t even know they have the condition.

“Osteoporosis is a common medical problem affecting 13 to 18 percent of American women over the age of 50,” Dr. Ibrahim says. “I want to educate our community about the screening tools, early prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in hopes of reducing the risk of fragility fracture, which is a major morbidity and mortality complication of osteoporosis.”

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and can easily break. Bones in the hip, spine and wrist are affected most often, but other bones can also break.
Dr. Ibrahim’s portion of the upcoming program will be preceded by a Happy Kitchen demonstration presented by FirstHealth Community Health Services and the Richmond 2020 Task Force. A program of the Sustainable Food Center, Happy Kitchen includes information on how to cook tasty yet healthy and inexpensive meals and how to get the most food for your money.
Both of the 2011 Women’s Series events are free to the public, and refreshments will be provided. Registration is required and can be made by calling 417-3772 or (800) 213-3284 toll-free.
