PINEHURST – In July 1987, David Cowherd, M.D., performed the first diagnostic cardiac catheterization at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Three years later, in September 1990, John F. Krahnert Jr., M.D., performed the hospital’s first open-heart surgery.

On Thursday, March 31, 2011, these two pioneers of Moore Regional’s award-winning heart care program will team up for the first part of a five-part educational series focusing on the services of the new Reid Heart Center: The FirstHealth Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Their program will get under way at 6 p.m. in the Reid Heart Center, which is located at 120 Page Road North, between Highway 211 and Memorial Drive, on the Moore Regional Hospital campus.

While discussing the topic “Got Heart Problems? Come and Learn from the Experts,” Drs. Krahnert and Cowherd will talk about the history of heart care at Moore Regional Hospital, noting how the program and its patients have changed over the past two decades. Program highlights will include information on patient volumes and characteristics, procedures and surgeries, technologies, techniques, infrastructure and personnel.

Dr. Krahnert is the senior member of a three-man cardiothoracic surgery team with the FirstHealth Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center at Moore Regional Hospital. He earned his medical degree from the Wake Forest School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency at the University of Kentucky before starting Moore Regional’s open-heart program.

After earning his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Cowherd did his internship and residency at the University of Kentucky and later completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of South Florida and an interventional fellowship at South Miami Hospital. He joined Pinehurst Medical Clinic and Moore Regional Hospital in 1987.

The second program in the Reid Heart Center series will be held on Thursday, April 21, and will feature Peter Duffy, M.D., cardiologist, of Pinehurst Cardiology Consultants, on the topic “Diagnosing and Treating Heart Disease.”

The remaining programs in the series are as follows:

  • Thursday, May 19, “Is Your Blood Flowing Like It Should? Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Peripheral Artery Disease,” Clinton K. Atkinson, M.D., and Joel Berman, M.D., vascular surgeons, Pinehurst Surgical
  • Thursday, June 9, “Shopping for Quality Heart Surgery: What Hospitals Measure and Why,” Art Edgerton, M.D., heart surgeon, FirstHealth Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center
  • Thursday, June 30, “Valve Disease: So You Think You Have a Heart Murmur,” Peter Ellman, M.D., heart surgeon, FirstHealth Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center

Each program in the Reid Heart Center series will begin at 6 p.m. There is no charge, but registration is required. Anyone who is interested in any of these programs can call (910) 715-1478 or (800) 213-3284 toll-free for more information or to register.
