ROCKINGHAM – From the time he was a boy accompanying his physician-father on rounds in his childhood home in Arizona, Joseph G. “Joe” Gibbons, D.O., wanted to be a doctor.
“I grew up with that environment,” he says. “That’s how I saw myself.”
Unlike his father, a now-retired neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Gibbons also saw himself in the “jack-of-all-trades” world of internal medicine – not only treating people who don’t feel well but also helping them stay healthy.
“I wanted to see people who needed many things done,” he says. “I wanted to be more aggressive, more involved.”
Dr. Gibbons recently joined FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine, where he provides primary care for adults age 18 and older. His office is located in Suite H of the medical office building at 809 Long Drive, Rockingham.
“FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine is committed to providing the finest care possible to the residents of Richmond County,” says John Jackson, president of FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. “Dr. Gibbons comes to us with an excellent reputation for quality patient care, and he is a great addition to our Richmond County health care team.”
A graduate of Arizona State University, Dr. Gibbons received his medical training at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri and completed his internship and residency at Greenville (S.C.) Memorial Hospital.
Prior to joining Richmond Medical Group, he was a hospitalist physician at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Dr. Gibbons’ wife, Jacqueline Gibbons, is a physician assistant in Moore Regional’s Hospitalist program, and the two have two young daughters: 6-year-old Paige and 4-year-old Hailey.
Although he considers Arizona home, Dr. Gibbons has spent much of his adult life in the South. His wife is from Georgia, and he received some of his medical training in South Carolina.
Dr. Gibbons says he was excited to be offered the opportunity to practice internal medicine with the Richmond Medical Group. “It’s an area where I believe I can make a big impact, a big difference,” he says.
FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group – Internal Medicine is accepting new patients while continuing the care of existing patients. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Gibbons, call (910) 417-4005.
