FirstHealth-sponsored Turkey Trot celebrates 30 years

| Date Posted: 10/11/2010

PINEHURST – This year is a special one for the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness as it celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Turkey Trot.  This annual event, which provides four running events for entire families to enjoy, has become a staple in Moore County in the past three decades.

Set for Saturday, Nov. 20, the event provides a One-Mile Fun Run, 5K and 10K and a Half-Marathon that will wind through the scenic areas of Pinehurst. The event is great for all levels – whether you are a novice jogger/walker or a serious competitive runner.

Last year saw the largest attendance ever for the Turkey Trot with more than 1,300 participants. Many of the participants were part of the MooreFit community, which offers incentives and friendly competition for local businesses to support their employees in a healthy and physically fit lifestyle.

This year, the Turkey Trot will be the third of four races in the Sandhills Race Series.  For more information on the race series, go to www.sandhillsraceseries.com.

Turkey Trot courses are USATF/RRTC-certified and begin and end at the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness-Pinehurst. Race times are 8:30 a.m. for the One-Mile Fun Run, 9 a.m. for the Half-Marathon and 9:30 a.m. for the 5K and 10K.

Registration can be done several ways: You can stop by the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness-Pinehurst and complete a registration form, you can go to www.active.com to register online, or you can call 715-1800 and have a form mailed to you.  You can also register on Friday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday, Nov. 20, at 7 a.m. Packet pick-up will also be at these times.

Male and female age group awards will be given in the 5K, 10K and Half-Marathon.  Overall prize awards for male and female will be presented in all events. Every participant will get a long-sleeved T-shirt, and a finisher medal will be given to each Half-Marathon participant.

Costs for the events are as follows: One-Mile Fun Run – 0-6 years - $10, all others – $15; 5K & 10K – $25; and Half-Marathon $30. There will be a $3 late fee for entries received after Nov. 17.

“This event would not be possible without the help of our many volunteers and sponsors such as the Pinecrest High School Interact Club, Rainbow Cycles, Aberdeen Coca Cola, The Plumbing Knight and Kirby Real Estate Group,” says race director Jodi Heimrich of the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness.
