ROCKINGHAM – FirstHealth of the Carolinas has opened an orthopaedics clinic in Rockingham that is dedicated to providing orthopaedics care – from initial office visit to surgery – in Richmond County.

Staffed by five board certified orthopaedic surgeons from Pinehurst Surgical’s Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Center, the Richmond Medical Group – Orthopaedic Clinic is located in the FirstHealth Richmond Medical Plaza at 809 Long Drive, Rockingham.

“We are very excited to offer this increased level of orthopaedics care to the residents of Richmond County,” says John Jackson, president of FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. “Our intention with this new venture is to assure our patients that all of the orthopaedics services that can be provided in Richmond County will be provided in Richmond County. As much as possible, there will be no need to travel to another location for orthopaedics procedures. The level of expertise in the five surgeons staffing our clinic will allow local patients to remain in this community from diagnosis to surgery and post-op with the assurance that they are getting the highest level of medical care.”

David Casey, M.D., serves as medical director of the orthopaedics clinic. “We are proud to be part of a top-rated hip and knee replacement program by a national quality rating organization,” he says. “We are excited as we work together to continue this same quality of care in Richmond County.”

In addition to Dr. Casey, the Pinehurst Surgical orthopaedic surgeons who staff the new clinic are David Strom, M.D.; Ward Oakley, M.D.; John R. Moore IV, M.D.; and Kurt Wohlrab, M.D. All are certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

“Our orthopaedic team is privileged to serve the community in our new FirstHealth office at 809 Long Drive,” says Dr. Oakley, the senior member of the orthopaedics team. “We feel more connected to the community, and our staff and patients are enjoying the new facility. We have been serving the Richmond community directly for more than 25 years, and we will continue to provide the high-quality specialty orthopaedic care that residents of Richmond County have come to expect. In addition, our orthopaedic services have expanded with the addition of Dr. Kurt Wohlrab, who provides sports medicine, trauma and fracture care, total joints and general orthopaedic care.”

Dr. Casey received his medical degree from Boston University in Massachusetts and completed his internship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., before returning to Boston University for his residency in orthopaedic surgery. He also completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction (hip and knee replacement surgery) at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

In addition to hip and knee replacements, his practice emphasis includes hip resurfacing, minimally invasive joint replacement, hip and knee arthroscopy, revision joint replacement, ACL reconstruction, orthopaedic trauma and fracture treatment.

Dr. Oakley earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Science in Memphis and did his internship at Baptist Memorial, also in Memphis, and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Memphis’s Campbell Clinic Foundation.

His practice emphasis includes shoulder arthroscopic, reconstruction and replacement surgery and knee arthroscopic and replacement surgery.

Dr. Strom earned his medical degree from Wayne State University’s School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich., and completed his internship and residency at the Wayne State University Affiliated Hospitals. He did a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz.

His practice emphasis centers on treatment of foot and ankle disorders, including arthritis and congenital and acquired deformities; ankle joint replacement and fractures; and diabetic foot problems.

Dr. Moore earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Oxford. He completed his internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and his residency at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. He completed a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction at the Presbyterian Hospital Center for Joint Replacement in Albuquerque, N.M.

His practice emphasis includes non-surgical treatment of arthritis of the hip and knee, joint replacement of the hip and knee, and minimally invasive hip replacement.

The fifth surgeon in the Richmond clinic is a recent addition to the Pinehurst Surgical team. Kurt Wohlrab, M.D., earned his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Ill., and completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Wohlrab, who is currently active duty with the U.S. Army, will see patients in Richmond County one day a week while completing his military obligation as a staff orthopaedic surgeon at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg next spring.

His practice emphasis includes sports medicine, total joints, and trauma and fracture care. He also performs procedures that treat femoral-acetabular impingement, a condition common among high-level athletes and caused by too much friction in the hip joint.

All five surgeons have hospital privileges at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.

FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital is a division of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
