Three-year cancer survivor Sharon Thompson brought her grandchildren (Bradon, Athan and Caibrey) along for the 23rd Annual National Cancer Survivors Day celebration hosted by FirstHealth of the Carolinas. The June 6 event, held at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst, featured a carnival atmosphere highlighted by a variety of games and activities including a “Dunk Your Doctor” booth. Radiation oncologist Jeffrey Acker, M.D., was one of four cancer care providers who spent a half-hour each as a good-natured target for hard-pitching patients and families. The 435 people who attended the recent event included 182 cancer survivors and 198 guests as well as 55 working volunteers, many of them FirstHealth employees who care for cancer patients.
