Physician assistant joins FirstHealth Family Care Center-Raeford

Amy Lockett, P.A.

RAEFORD – Like all young people, Amy Lockett went through a period when she was trying to make a career choice.

She knew she wanted to do something in medicine, but was having trouble deciding between becoming a physician or a physician assistant.

She ultimately decided that a career as a physician assistant would give her more time for patient education, a part of the work that she really enjoys. “That’s the kind of provider I wanted to be,” she says.

Lockett recently joined the FirstHealth Family Care Center-Raeford as a physician assistant specializing in family medicine. She is a welcome addition to the clinic, which has noted an increase in patient volumes that should become even greater as the Department of Defense’s Base Realignment and Closure program continues to affect Hoke County and the surrounding area.

She joins a staff that also includes Robert Townsend, D.O.; Marcus Lowry, M.D.; and Kathy Settle, FNP-C, a certified family nurse practitioner.

“We’re pleased to be able to add Amy to our staff,” says Dr. Townsend. “We’ve been seeing patients in this clinic since 1998, and we offer several benefits including specialty services offered by specialists from FirstHealth, as well as a local physical rehabilitation service. Amy brings a tremendous depth of experience and knowledge and, with these services, will be able to make a tremendous contribution to our community. Please help me by welcoming her to our community.”

Born in Chicago and raised in the suburbs of Buffalo, N.Y., Lockett received a B.S. degree in Physician Assisting from D’Youville College in Buffalo in 2001. She moved to North Carolina to become a physician assistant serving rural health clinics in the Lillington area and held that position for two years before joining Fort Bragg’s Womack Army Medical Center almost five years ago.

Lockett says she decided to specialize in family care because of the noted shortage of primary care providers, especially in rural areas, and because she loves the work.

“That’s my favorite,” she says of family medicine. “I love the mix of kids and adults. It keeps you on your toes, and those things help you to be a better provider.”

Amy Lockett, P.A., is now accepting patients at the FirstHealth Family Care Center-Raeford. To make an appointment with her or one of the other providers, call (910) 904-2350.
