Annual “Just for You” series to highlight topics of interest to women

ROCKINGHAM – When Lauren Alter, M.D., talks about exercise during the opening session of the “Just for You” Women’s Series at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital on April 6, she will focus on the risks as well as the benefits of exercise – on what works, why it works and how to incorporate exercise into a lifestyle.

“In 1996, the Surgeon General formulated a call to action for doctors and the public,” Dr. Alter says. “The benefits of exercise are universal in affecting health and longevity; however, there are risks as well as perceived barriers so I will be giving a reasoned approach to the exercise prescription.”

Kimberley Lingler, M.D., will talk about “Sleep Changes and Concerns” at the second program in the series on April 13, noting how sleep is different for women. She will also discuss common interventions and treatments for sleep abnormalities.

“I will review why sleep is important, normal sleep patterns and normal changes in sleep with aging,” Dr. Lingler says. “It’s important for women to be aware of their health and keep up with routine preventive recommendations so that they can avoid future problems and live a long and enjoyable life.”

Dr. Alter and Dr. Lingler are two of the four Richmond Memorial Hospital physicians whose presentations will highlight the “Just for You” series. The others are Yolanda Newton, M.D., an OB/GYN specialist, and Andrew Doolittle, M.D., a specialist in otolaryngology (ear nose and throat).

Dr. Alter, who is board certified in internal medicine, is affiliated with FirstHealth Medical Group-Internal Medicine. She earned her M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, where she also completed a residency in internal medicine.

A board certified specialist in family medicine at FirstHealth Richmond Family Medicine, Dr. Lingler received her M.D. from Temple University in Pennsylvania and completed a family practice residency at Washington Hospital, also in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Newton is a member of the FirstHealth Richmond Medical Group-Women’s Center practice. She received her M.D. from East Carolina University’s School of Medicine and did her OB/GYN residency at St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pa.

A board certified otolaryngologist with Mid-Carolinas Surgical Associates, Dr. Doolittle earned his M.D. from the Boston (Mass.) University School of Medicine and completed his otolaryngology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The women’s series programs will be held each Tuesday in April, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the hospital’s Third-Floor Auditorium. Participation is free, but registration is required for each event.

Refreshments will be provided at each of the four programs, which are sponsored by the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation, supporting FirstHealth services for the residents of Richmond County, and Richmond Memorial Hospital.

Ken Goodman is chair of the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation.

“The annual women’s series is an eagerly anticipated event for the Richmond County community,” he says, “and the Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation is proud to be a part of it. Women in our community receive valuable health care information that they can apply to their everyday lives, and that’s exactly what our Foundation hopes to accomplish in its support of this important program.”

Each program in the “Just for You” series will begin at 6 p.m. with a presentation on a light topic that will be followed at 6:45 p.m. by the discussion of a health-related subject by a FirstHealth physician who practices in Richmond County.

Programs are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, April 6: “Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body Fat Composition,” Richmond 2020 Group; and “Starting an Exercise Program,” Lauren Alter, M.D.
  • Tuesday, April 13: “Happy Feet – Foot Care and How to Select Proper Shoes,” FirstHealth Wound Care Center; and “Sleep Changes and Concerns,” Kimberley Lingler, M.D.
  • Tuesday, April 20: “Nourish to Flourish: Balancing Yin and Yang to Promote Health,” Kelsey Coy, an acupuncturist with the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness; and “Hormone Replacement Therapy,” Yolanda Newton, M.D.
