LAURINBURG, N.C. – Rony Shammas, M.D., has joined FirstHealth Cardiology in Laurinburg, located at 705-B Lauchwood Drive.
Dr. Shammas holds a Doctor of Medicine from the American University of Beirut and completed an internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He went on to complete a cardiology fellowship at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, as well as an interventional cardiology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, VCU Medical Center West.
Prior to joining FirstHealth, Dr. Shammas worked with ECU Health for more than 20 years. He said his interest in medicine was sparked at a young age, inspiring a long-held fascination with the human body and disease.
“As I pursued my medical education and training, the complexities, challenges and rapid advances in cardiology drew me to specialize in this field,” Dr. Shammas said. “Today, as a practicing cardiologist, I am motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact on my patients’ lives and to be part of the ongoing effort to improve cardiac health and prevent cardiovascular disease.”
FirstHealth’s reputation and high level of staff satisfaction encouraged him to join the health care system after a successful career with ECU Health.
“My top interest is to deliver safe, effective and high-quality care to my patients. I am passionate about practicing evidence-based medicine and applying the guidelines to ensure that every patient receives the best care possible,” he said. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to practice cardiology in such a wonderful community, and to contribute to the outstanding medical services that are available to residents of the area.”
Outside of work, Dr. Shammas enjoys reading and spending time with his family and three dogs. He is married to his college sweetheart, Lina, who works as a board-certified health and wellness coach. Together, they have three adult children: Ronnie, Michael and Natalie, who all graduated from Duke University and are successful in their respective fields.
