FirstHealth’s Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center Earns ADCES Accreditation

| Date Posted: 8/19/2022

PINEHURST, N.C. – FirstHealth’s Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center has been reaccredited by the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES). The ADCES accreditation includes FirstHealth’s location in Pinehurst along with its extension sites in Montgomery, Richmond and Hoke counties.

Diabetes Risk Assessment

The Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center offers counseling for individuals with specific medical needs as well as those who wish to maintain optimal health. FirstHealth has been nationally accredited since 2005.

“This accreditation sets our program apart from others because we are held to a higher standard,” Michelle Cole, R.D., LDN, CDE, the program’s director, said. “We use evidence-based practices with each of our patients, which leads to more consistent care, better patient outcomes and fewer hospital readmissions.”

Diabetes education helps individuals with diabetes learn how to manage their disease and be as healthy as possible. It focuses on seven self-care behaviors that are important to focus on to be healthy and fully enjoy life:

  • Healthy eating
  • Being active
  • Monitoring
  • Taking medication
  • Problem solving
  • Healthy coping
  • Reducing risks

Cole said that FirstHealth’s Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center’s diabetic patients may also now participate in classes specifically designed for weight management. These classes include education on how to eat better, prepare healthy meals and how to navigate the grocery store.
