PINEHURST, N.C. – Madonna Biritwum, M.D., has joined FirstHealth of the Carolinas Infectious Diseases at Moore Regional Hospital.
Dr. Biritwum received her Doctor of Medicine from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. She completed both her internship and residency in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital in New York and went on to complete her fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York.
FirstHealth infectious diseases physicians Paul Jawanda, M.D., and Gretchen Arnoczy, M.D., said they are thrilled to welcome Dr. Biritwum to the team.
“She brings a lot of great experience to the table and we are happy to be working alongside her,” Dr. Jawanda said.
Dr. Biritwum has been interested in medicine since childhood and said she enjoys the infectious diseases specialty for its dynamic nature and how it intersects with curative medicine as well as preventative medicine, including vaccines.
“As an infectious diseases specialist, I have had the opportunity to train and live in a few locations and received exposure to many medical conditions that intersect with, or have, infectious disease origin,” she said.
Prior to joining FirstHealth, Dr. Biritwum worked as an infectious diseases specialist at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Washington since 2017. From 2011 to 2017, she worked at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
She said she enjoyed living in New York during her residency and fellowship and relocating back to a warmer East Coast state to join FirstHealth was an appealing prospect.
“North Carolina has similar weather to Ghana and the beaches and wooded regions make it attractive,” Dr. Biritwum said. “During the interview process, I met a few employees who were so wonderful and friendly. Every member of the infectious diseases group is amazing, helpful and friendly. I have really felt welcome and look forward to a great time working here.”
Dr. Biritwum is married and has three children, two of whom are in college. Her youngest daughter is in high school. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, watching movies and occasionally sewing.
