TROY, N.C. – FirstHealth of the Carolinas has named Rebecca W. Carter, MSN, R.N., FACHE, as president of FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital (MMH).

Rebecca W. Carter, MSN, R.N., FACHE

Carter has more than 20 years of senior hospital management experience.  She is currently chief executive officer and chief nursing officer for Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.  Blue Ridge, part of the Mission Health System, is a critical access hospital located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.  Carter has served in this role since 2014.

Prior to her current role, she served for 17 years as chief operating officer and chief nursing officer for Transylvania Regional Hospital, a rural acute care facility in Brevard, North Carolina.  She also served as director of clinical education, support and development at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville for eight years.  Carter’s career also includes experience working as a staff nurse and in nursing education.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Becky to the Montgomery County community,” said Jimmy Preslar, chair of the Montgomery Memorial Hospital Board of Advisors. “She is an accomplished health care executive with proven experience in leading a critical access hospital, making her the ideal candidate to serve as president of Montgomery Memorial Hospital.”

A North Carolina native, Carter holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She was inducted in the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2005, and was recently named to Becker’s Healthcare 70 CEOs, presidents and administrators of critical access hospitals to know.

“I am confident that Becky’s leadership and exceptional commitment to patient care will benefit FirstHealth of the Carolinas and the communities we serve,” said Mickey Foster, FirstHealth chief executive officer.  “Becky’s deep understanding of community hospitals and rural health care, as well as the needs of our patients and community, will continue to help us deliver the highest quality care to the residents of Montgomery County.”

Carter will join FirstHealth in December, succeeding current president Beth Walker, R.N., who announced in July her plans to retire in January. Walker has worked for MMH for 38 years and has served as hospital president since 2011.

“I look forward to serving as president of Montgomery Memorial Hospital,” said Carter.  “This hospital plays a significant role in delivering safe, high-quality care to the communities it serves, and I am excited to build upon the success that has been achieved.”
