“One of the biggest factors that has helped me as a bariatric surgery patient is the monthly Support Group offered by the FirstHealth Bariatric Center.
The bariatric support group is the first and only (so far) support group I’ve ever attended. Going into it I was very skeptical.
I’ve always been a very independent person and have always done things on my own. The only reason I went in the first place was because I was told I had to attend at least one support group meeting before my surgery and, to be honest, I wasn’t blown away the first time I went. I got a few pointers but didn’t really feel it was anything special.
The next support group meeting was six days after my surgery and I think I went mostly because I’d been stuck in the house for 5 days and wanted to get out. This time was different…I was blown away.
Since then I’ve been to every support group meeting except one and I always look forward to them.
No two meetings are ever the same and the changing mix of people means there’s always a fresh perspective on a topic or a new question being asked. Sometimes I’m the one getting support, sometimes I’m the one giving support, sometimes I go in with lots of questions and sometimes I don’t have any, but every time I’ve come away feeling helped and supported and with renewed energy towards achieving my goals. Several times I’ve gone in with the feeling that everything was great and I didn’t have any questions, only to be reminded about something I’d forgotten about or corrected about some misconception I’d had.
A support group is a wonderful way to connect with other people who are going through, have just been through, or are about to go through exactly the same thing as you.
Dr. Washington, Dr. Grantham, Melissa Herman and everyone at FirstHealth are wonderful, but sometimes I just need to talk with someone who’s struggled with the exact same issues as me and gotten through it. It’s a wonderful experience and I’ve found it easy and freeing to talk and ask questions that I would otherwise be hesitant about. I didn’t think I needed a support group to succeed but I really did and now I can’t imagine my life without it.”
