PINEHURST – Spring, a time of renewal for most people, is fast approaching in the Sandhills – out with the old and in with the new.
This sense of renewal has a different meaning for many. For some, it means cleaning out the house; for others, simply cleaning the house. Many people feel relieved just to have the opportunity to get outdoors – to bike, hike or run.
Spring cleaning can also apply to the health of your body and mind and a time to consider the importance of annual tests or that first colonoscopy.
“The effectiveness of mammograms for early detection of breast cancer has been one of the most important breakthroughs for breast cancer in the history of medicine,” says Michael J. Sundborg, M.D., gynecologic oncologist at Southern Pines Women’s Health Center, a FirstHealth clinic. “Early detection ensures a significant chance for a possible cure for breast cancer. Also, regular pap smears are another of the most important advances in the area of women’s health. Performing these within the current guidelines (at least every three years) can not only detect early cervical cancers, but, more importantly, will allow the effective prevention of cervical cancer.”
To learn more about annual tests, screenings and more, gather with other women from around the Sandhills on Thursday, March 13 at 5:30 p.m., at the Clara McLean House of FirstHealth (across Memorial Drive from FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital). Attendees will find out the importance of annual exams, especially when those exams come to detecting breast, colon or lung cancer. For those interested, free bone-density screenings will be offered beginning at 5 p.m.
The “Spring Cleaning” program is one of five monthly educational sessions designed just for women and featuring a panel-style discussion with a moderator. The series is sponsored by the Moore Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
The final session, “Back in the Game,” takes place on Tuesday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m.
The series is free and open to the public. Each session will be held at the Clara McLean House, 20 FirstVillage Drive, Pinehurst. For more information, or to register, call (800)213-3284.
