"In April 2009, I had the realize band placed. Through hard work, dedication, commitment and most of all the advice and encouragement of Dr. Washington, I have reached my goal weight. It's a lifetime commitment and not a quick fix. No regrets!"

- Nancy Chambers, FirstHealth Bariatric Center patient

Awesome work, Nancy. Thanks for sharing!

The FirstHealth Bariatric Center offers Roux-en Y divided gastric bypass surgery, the adjustable gastric band and the gastric sleeve. Since it began in 1999, the bariatric surgery program has enabled more than 1,000 patients to lose weight and restore active healthy lives.

Weight-loss surgery may offer a number of benefits:

• Significant long-term weight loss • Effective control of diabetes with Type 2 diabetes • Effective control of high blood pressure • Control of sleep apnea • Improved symptoms of arthritis related to excess weight • Greatly improved physical appearance • Improved self esteem and employment opportunities

For patients who are obese or morbidly obese and have been unsuccessful in controlling their weight through diet and exercise programs, weight loss surgery may be an effective treatment option.

The FirstHealth Bariatric Center follows the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines when considering a patient for bariatric surgery. You are a possible candidate for weight loss surgery if:

• Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 40 or higher (morbid obesity) OR • Your BMI is between 35-40 and you have obesity co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure or diabetes AND YOU • Are age 18 – 60 • Are more than 100 pounds over your ideal weight • Have a history of failure to control weight through other methods such as diet and exercise

BMI is a measurement of a person's body mass index, based on height and weight.
