SANFORD – Peter I. Ellman, M.D., a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon with Reid Heart Center at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, will discuss “State-of-the-Art Treatment for Valvular Heart Disease” during an upcoming program in Sanford.

Scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, the program will be held at Carolina Trace, 2100 Country Club Drive.
During the program, Dr. Ellman will focus on the causes and symptoms of the two most common reasons people need surgery for a malfunctioning heart valve: aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. He will also discuss state-of-the art treatment options for these problems, such as valve repair and replacement, as well as more recent advancements in valvular surgery, including the minimally invasive TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) procedure.
Dr. Ellman majored in English at Dartmouth College before earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia and his cardiothoracic training at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, he specializes in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass surgery, valvular repair and replacement, and diseases of the aorta. He also treats patients with non-cardiac diseases of the chest including benign and malignant processes of the lung and mediastinum.
