Physicians have been performing robotic surgical procedures since 1996. One of the tools used by surgeons at FirstHealth is the da Vinci Si surgical system. This technology helps our surgeons perform the highest level of state- of-the-art surgical procedures for the treatment of an array of ailments.
The first robotic surgery was performed in the 1980’s with a device called PUMA 560. In 2000 da Vinci Surgery System broke new ground by becoming the first robotic surgery system approved by the FDA. (Source: Robotic Oncology) This surgery system is named after Leonardo da Vinci.
During the late fifteenth century Leonardo da Vinci was known for many things, including being a renowned painter, sculptor, architect, musician, inventor, and writer. His most famous works of art include the paintings The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. On top of his famous artwork, da Vinci is honored for his technological ingenuity. He had conceptualized a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power, a calculator, and a robot, in which he referred to as a “mechanical knight”. According to the manufacturer of the da Vinci System, this system was named after Leonardo because of his invention of the “mechanical knight” and his ability to impeccably use anatomical accuracy and three-dimensional details to bring his work to life.
Da Vinci Surgical Systems:
The da Vinci Surgery System is a robotic surgical system made by Intuitive Surgical. It is designed to facilitate complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. This device makes the surgeon’s hand movements more precise, and provides a three-dimensional view of complex procedures through small surgical incisions. It is used for urological surgeries, general laparoscopic surgeries, general non-cardiovascular thoracosopic surgeries and thoracoscopically-assisted cardiotomy procedures.
Da Vinci Si:
The third-generation robotic system that FirstHealth uses, the da Vinci Si, offers the latest technology and imaging for minimally invasive procedures. Some new features include:
- Enhanced three-dimensional, high –definition vision of the operative field with up to 10 times the previous magnification
- A console featuring multiple ergonomic adjustments that allows surgeons to customize four different parameters for added comfort during longer procedures
- Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
- Surgical dexterity and precision that is far greater than even that of a human hand
- Updated and simplified user interface to enhance operating room efficiency
Because robot-assisted operations are done through a few tiny incisions instead of one larger one, patients typically have less pain, shorter hospital stays and much faster recovery.
FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital’s FirstHealth Cancer Services offers the latest cancer treatment options for patients in the Pinehurst, Raeford, Sanford, Lumberton, Laurinburg, Rockingham and Tory regions of North Carolina and beyond.
