PINEHURST – More than 200 kids participated in the fifth annual Youth Triathlon that included swimming, biking and running on a closed course on the FirstHealth campus.
The event was created by the staff of the FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness to promote fitness in children ages 4 through 12.
“The goal of this event is for the kids to have fun and feel successful,” says race director Jodi Heimrich. “We created courses with distances that are age-appropriate.”
With the help of many volunteers, the children swam in the center’s indoor pool, biked on a closed bike course that included the campus of the fitness center and Pinehurst Surgical parking lots and finally ran on Pinehurst Greenway trails. Volunteers from the Pinecrest High School football team, Sandhills Striders, Sandhills Cycling Club and Sandhills Triathlon Club helped with the event.
All children participating received a finisher’s medal when crossing the finish line, and awards were given to the first-, second- and third-place boy and girl in each race.
