Muhammad J. Iqbal, M.D.
ROCKINGHAM – Because they perform a variety of functions involving the removal of extra fluids, wastes and toxins from the body, the kidneys are vital to overall human health.
The kidneys regulate the composition of the blood. They stimulate the making of red blood cells and maintain the body’s calcium levels. By maintaining salt and water balance, they also help regulate blood pressure.
At the same time, according to Muhammad J. Iqbal, M.D., high blood pressure (hypertension) can cause kidney damage. So can diabetes.
“It is very important to control diabetes and blood pressure,” Dr. Iqbal says. “It is very important to avoid anything that can damage the kidneys.”
A board certified nephrologist affiliated with FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital, Dr. Iqbal will discuss the importance of kidney health during an education session sponsored by the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation. The program will be held Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Richmond Memorial Hospital.
In addition to overall kidney health, Dr. Iqbal will talk about the importance of fluids to kidney health, the effects of some medications on the kidneys, kidney disease, what leads to dialysis and how dialysis can save lives. He will also explain the glomerular filtration rate that appears on blood work results.
Dr. Iqbal received his medical degree from King Edward Medical College, Punjab University, Pakistan. He completed medical residencies at Texas Tech University Health Science Center, University Health Center of Pittsburgh and the University of Louisville School Of Medicine
There is no charge for Dr. Iqbal’s program, and the public is invited to attend. However, space is limited and reservations are required. To make reservations, call the FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital Foundation at (910) 417-3701 by Oct. 28. Refreshments will be provided.
