RAEFORD – Healthy eating can be fun and delicious as participants in the HokeFit “Eat Your Colors” challenge will find out at the Sept. 29 kickoff event.
A cooking demo—with a healthy focus—will be the highlight of the event, which will begin the healthy eating phase of the HokeFit worksite wellness challenge.
The healthy food demonstration will be provided by Sallie Beth Johnson of FirstHealth Community Health Services. Johnson will educate participants about packing more nutrition into their day with colorful fruits and vegetables.
To participate in the “Eat Your Colors” challenge, employers must first sign up their businesses via the HokeFit.org website. Then employees can go to the website to sign up for the competition under their business or organization.
The businesses with the greatest percentage of participation in the challenge will be recognized and receive a trophy.
Individual participants will earn points by recording what they eat on the HokeFit.org site and by eating at least one serving from each of the five food color groups each day. Employees who reach 300 or more points at the end of the three-month competition are eligible for prizes.
HokeFit is a program to encourage a healthy lifestyle among Hoke County’s employees. The idea was conceived by the Hoke County First-In-Health 2020 Task Force and modeled after a similar program in Moore County.
HokeFit’s inaugural challenge began in the spring of 2010 and was called “Ready, Set, Walk” to encourage a more active lifestyle. Pedometers were given out, and the HokeFit website was created where individuals could enter their daily steps for prizes.
Sixteen Hoke county businesses took part in the challenge, and more than 740 individuals walked 8.5 million steps.
The Hoke County First-In-Health 2020 Vision Task Force is made up of individuals and businesses who are working to make Hoke County a healthier place in which to live and work. Participating businesses and agencies include Hoke County School System, Hoke County Health Department, Averette Engineering, Unilever, Burlington Industries, FirstHealth of the Carolinas and others.
