PINEHURST – A veteran surgical technologist who says that his “patients come first” has received FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital’s first annual Patty Warren Surgical Technologist Award.
Tom Kane, administrative director of Surgical Services, presented the award to Royal Wyatt during a brief program held Sept. 24 during Surgical Technologist Week. A certified surgical technologist and the lead surgical tech for Moore Regional’s vascular program, Wyatt was trained by the military and spent 20 years as a surgical tech with the U.S. Army before joining Moore Regional 15 years ago.
He is recently married and makes his home in Hoke County.
Wyatt, who received three different nominations for the award, is known for his outstanding patient care. “When a surgeon posts a case, he is one of the first ones to go pull the case and get equipment ready,” one of the nominations said. “He always thinks ahead and anticipates what may be needed.”
At the end of the day, “I know I’ve helped somebody,” Wyatt says his work on the surgical team.
The Patty Warren Surgical Technologist Award is named for the late Patty Warren, a long-time and much-respected member of Moore Regional’s surgical team who died in 2000. Her husband, Francis, attended the recent award presentation.
Wyatt, who worked with Warren, has fond memories of his former co-worker including the fact that both were Washington Redskins fans. “She was a laid-back lady, but she got the job done,” Wyatt says.
