Richmond Memorial Hospital to host Kids’ Day on May 8

ROCKINGHAM – Families participating in the annual Kids’ Day event at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital will have the chance to see, up close, one of the helicopters that fly gravely ill or injured patients out of the county.
A helicopter and flight team from UNC Carolina Air Care will be at the upcoming event – unless they happen to be called into use.
“It’s not every day you get to walk up to a helicopter that’s outfitted for medical transport,” says Amy Hamilton Forester, outreach manager for FirstHealth Community Health Services in Richmond County. “It’s nice that they are willing to come, and we hope it works out that they get here.”
Kids’ Day activities will get under way at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, and continue, rain or shine, until noon. The program is free and open to all area children and their parents or caregivers.
In addition to the Air Care helicopter and crew, another highlight of the Kids’ Day program will involve a Bike Rodeo. Hosted by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Helms, the event will be held on a pre-set course that is designed to help children learn the basics of bicycle safety. Bike helmets will be available for loan during the event or for purchase at the reduced fee of $7 each.
“Children are encouraged to bring their own bikes or scooters,” says Forester. “That way we can check out what they are riding.”
Several Richmond County physicians will also be on hand during the program to conduct health screenings or for medical consultation following screenings. They include pediatricians Shamsul Khan, M.D., who will do ear and throat checks; and Patrick Egbe, M.D., who will be available to advise parents about their children’s BMI (body mass index) results. Members of the Richmond County 2020 Vision Committee will do the BMI computations, which are based on a child’s age, weight and height.
Vision checks will be conducted by Kimberley Lingler, M.D., of FirstHealth Richmond Family Medicine, a local medical practice that accepts patients of all ages; and the staff of Ahdieh Pediatrics will do asthma screenings.
At a cost of $25, lab personnel from Richmond Memorial Hospital will do blood draws for metabolic profiles. Participants in this screening must be children aged 13 to 17 who are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Results will indicate the child’s cholesterol (both HDL and LDL), triglycerides, glucose, blood count and iron levels.
Participating public service agencies will include the Rockingham Police Department, which will provide photo identification cards for participating children; and Hamlet Fire and Rescue, which will highlight water safety. Safe Kids Mid-Carolinas Region will do car seat checks.
Fun activities will include games and a Moonwalk, and a booth for taste-testing healthy snacks will also be available.
“Kids’ Day is an annual tradition for the Richmond County community, and the staff of Richmond Memorial Hospital is once again happy to host it,” says Richmond Memorial President John J. Jackson. “We look forward to another successful event on May 8 and invite children of all ages to be a part of it.”
