Cancer CARE-Net
Created in response to very real situations like these, the Cancer CARE-Net program pairs specially trained volunteers with patients and their families to provide one-on-one emotional support and advocacy beyond the hospital walls and clinical settings.
Overview Make A Donation
-
A young mother with three small children and a terminally ill husband losing the battle against cancer longs for someone to confide in – to talk about things she can’t voice to her family and friends.
-
A former soldier reveals that being in Vietnam was not nearly as frightening as being diagnosed with cancer: there he felt part of a team in combat, but facing cancer he feels alone and vulnerable.
-
A grandfather shares his dread of hearing he has a clean bill of health: “There is no defined ending point with cancer. There’s always the emotional uncertainty - am I going to be sick again? Will I make it this time around?”
Because many of our volunteers are also cancer survivors, or have experienced cancer, they are able to understand the patients’ concerns and help answer questions, provide hope, and make connections to community resources. Learn more.
If you have cancer and would like to be matched with a Cancer CARE-Net volunteer, please contact Laura Kuzma, Program Coordinator, at (910) 715-4230 or lkuzma@firsthealth.org.
Your kind donation – either financial or as a volunteer – helps ensure that no one in our community must face cancer alone. Thank you.
