Who needs a wellness coach?

Many people want to be fitter, lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, etc. but we find it extremely difficult to make these important changes on our own.  We might begin a fitness program or go on a diet, but we don’t seem to be able to follow through with what we started.  The knowledge and information about being healthy is all around us, yet achieving good health is much easier said than done.  This is where wellness coaching can make a difference!

What is wellness coaching?

Wellness coaching is both a partnership and a process to set goals, prioritize what matters most and help you to follow through.  The wellness coaching process will build confidence in your ability to make changes and create new healthy habits.  A partnership with a coach provides structure, accountability, expertise, and inspiration that enables the client to learn, grow and develop beyond what he or she can do alone.

How is wellness coaching different from personal training, therapy or seeing a dietitian?

While many wellness coaches are dietitians, personal trainers, or therapists, not all trainers, therapists or dietitians are wellness coaches.  The biggest difference between a wellness coach and other allied health practitioners is in the approach that they take towards helping you to achieve your goals.  Unlike a personal trainer or dietitian, a wellness coach does not lead you through exercises or give you a specific diet to follow.  Unlike therapy, a wellness coach will not focus on your past, but will look toward your future.  A wellness coach will help you develop goals that are meaningful and self-motivating for you, and help you integrate them into your life in sustainable ways.

What are some features of wellness coaching?

An entire program consists of an initial appointment (about 60 minutes), and usually can be completed in 12 weeks, although it is not uncommon for coaching relationships to last longer.  Clients are encouraged to try new activities, see themselves in a new way and have fun.

What if I work difficult hours or don’t live close enough to come to regular appointments?

Wellness coaching can be done either in person or on the phone. Coaching over the phone is very effective. Listening is the cornerstone of coaching. Lack of visual cues often frees people from stereotypes and many people feel they can express themselves more freely on the telephone. Telephone coaching also gives more flexibility as it is not restricted by geography or office hours. If visual contact is preferred, in person sessions are available.

Should I reschedule or skip my appointment if I haven’t made progress or met my goal?

Definitely not! That is exactly when you need to meet for support.
