Recognizing Extraordinary Nurses

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. FirstHealth is proud to be a DAISY Award Partner that recognizes our nurses with this special honor.

About the DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP) at 33 years old. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. The Foundation was created in Pat’s memory to recognize extraordinary nurses for the enormous difference they make in the lives of their patients every day.

How are FirstHealth nurses recognized?

Starting in 2025, recognition ceremonies will occur in February, April, June, August, October and December. All nominees will receive a copy of their nomination and a thank-you card, with the top 10 nominees also receiving a Daisy Nominee pin. Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony in their unit and will receive a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch.

Going Above and Beyond

About the Bee Award

The BEE Award (Beyond Exceptional Expectations) recognizes (non-nurse) colleagues who support the role of the Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse to deliver extraordinary patient care. Colleagues may include: Patient Care Technicians, Specialty technicians (i.e. OR techs, Mental Health techs etc.), Respiratory Therapists, Food and Nutrition, Transport, Public Safety, Lab, Imaging, Environmental Services, and any other colleague outside of nursing. Because a DAISY can’t survive without a BEE and a BEE can’t survive without a DAISY! FirstHealth is pleased to recognize our colleagues who are extraordinary every day.

How are team members recognized?

Acknowledging the strength behind teamwork, the BEE Award is given in conjunction with the DAISY Award to symbolize the relationship between nursing and clinical support caregivers, the same way bees and flowers depend on one another. Each BEE Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony in their department and will receive a certificate and a BEE Award pin.
