PINEHURST, N.C. -- Jamaica Reid, PA-C, is a new inpatient palliative care provider at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
As a palliative care provider in a hospital setting, Reid helps patients with serious, life-impacting conditions develop a plan for the best possible quality of life after they leave the hospital.
“There’s beauty in palliative care,” said Reid, a board-certified physician assistant. “I sit down with my patients and their families, and we have conversations about what’s important to them. I help them unpack what’s happening with their health, and we discuss treatment options that correspond with their personal goals and values.”

Palliative care, also called supportive care, is specialized medical care delivered by a team of professionals focusing on the physical and emotional well-being of people with serious or chronic illnesses. Providers treat condition-related symptoms such as pain, nausea and fatigue and educate patients so they can make informed health care decisions. Palliative care social workers assist with emotional support and link patients and families to helpful resources.
Palliative care can be delivered in the hospital or in an outpatient setting, including a clinic or patients’ homes. Patients can receive palliative care while also undergoing aggressive treatments to cure or slow the progression of their conditions. It’s appropriate for people of any age and at any stage of illness.
Before joining FirstHealth, Reid was a hospitalist at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville and worked in the emergency department at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg. She holds a bachelor Bachelor of science Sciencedegree in Bbiochemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a Mmaster’s degree in Pphysiology from North Carolina State University and a Master’s in master’s degree in physician assistant studiesPhysician Assistant Studies from Methodist University.
