FirstHealth’s cancer program
earns national recognition
The accredited cancer treatment program at FirstHealth Moore Regional
Hospital has received its second Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA)
from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
Established in 2004, the OAA recognizes cancer programs that
strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A
facility receives the award by demonstrating a commendation level of
compliance following an evaluation by a physician surveyor.
Only 95 cancer facilities across the United States—just four of them in
North Carolina—received an OAA based on surveys performed in 2008.
The number represents about 19 percent of the 478 programs surveyed
last year.
Moore Regional’s cancer treatment program received its first CoC
accreditation in 1995, was reaccredited in 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2008,
and was awarded its first OAA in 2006, the first year it qualified for the
recognition.

FirstHealth announces name change
for Richmond Memorial
The phrase “a division of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital” is
now officially a part of the name of FirstHealth Richmond Memorial
Hospital.
The change follows the consolidation of billing numbers for the
Pinehurst and Rockingham hospitals, which will now be evaluated as
one organization for purposes of patient satisfaction, quality data and
accreditation. Having one provider number for both hospitals is also
expected to result in better coordination of patient care as well as a cost
savings to the organization.
“Changing the name of our signs will not be the only visible part of
this effort,” said John J. Jackson, President of the Richmond Memorial
campus. “Consolidating provider numbers includes consolidating the
medical staffs as well as many policies and procedures with Moore
Regional. We are excited about the change and look forward to
streamlining our processes while continuing to offer quality health care
services to Richmond County residents.”

FirstHealth files CON for
hospital in Hoke County
FirstHealth of the Carolinas has filed a Certificate
of Need (CON) with the North Carolina Department
of Health Services Regulation to build a hospital
in Hoke County. Construction on the $30–$35
million project is expected to begin in early 2010
on a site along Highway 401 northeast of Raeford.
Completion is expected by late 2011.
The FirstHealth Hoke Hospital will house a 24/7
emergency department staffed by physicians from
Sandhills Emergency Physicians, the practice that
provides emergency services for all three FirstHealth
hospitals.
The hospital will also have eight inpatient beds,
an overnight observation unit and one operating
room, full laboratory services, state-of-the-art
imaging technology, diagnostic cardiology, and
transport options via critical care transport or
helicopter.
In accordance with a state-identified need for an
additional MRI in the Moore/ Hoke planning area,
FirstHealth’s hospital application included a separate
CON for an MRI unit for the new hospital.
According to CEO Charles T. Frock, FirstHealth of
the Carolinas made a commitment to serve Hoke
County many years ago. “Building a new hospital in
the county is a continuation of that commitment,”
he said. “I believe we are filling a great need in the
community.”
