Electrocardiogram (or EKG) – Appointments Required
Electrocardiogram (or EKG)
Fee $25
An electrocardiogram (or EKG) evaluates the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.
Heart problems can cause a variety of symptoms:
- Chest discomfort or pain
- Shortness of breath
- Palpitations (fast heartbeats)
- Anxiety
- Weakness
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- History of fainting
If you suffer from any of these symptoms, an EKG can:
- Find the cause of unexplained chest pain, such as a heart attack, inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart or reduced blood flow to the heart.
- Find the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as unexplained chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting or rapid, irregular heartbeats.
- Check the heart’s electrical activity.
- Find out if the walls of the heart chambers are too thick.
- Check how well medicines are working and whether they are causing side effects that affect the heart.
- Check how well mechanical devices that are implanted in the heart, such as pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), are working to control a normal heartbeat.
- Check the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes or a family history of early heart disease.
What to expect
When your heart beats, it creates electrical signals. The EKG detects these signals from the surface of your skin and records them on a piece of graph paper. You will not feel anything during the procedure. EKGs that are conducted on the FirstHealth Mobile Health Van are interpreted by a registered nurse who reads the results to the person having the test and then forwards the results to the patient’s personal physician.
