Infectious Diseases Program

FirstHealth of the Carolinas Infectious Diseases provides a variety of services related to prevention and treatment of disease caused by infectious agents including infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Physicians in this specialty are trained and board certified in Internal Medicine and have an additional two years of training and board certification in the specialty of Infectious Diseases.

Examples of the type of problems that infectious disease physicians have expertise in diagnosing and treating include:

  • Outpatient intravenous antibiotic therapy
  • Infections of bone and joints and orthopedic hardware
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
  • Ostemyelitis
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • HIV infection and AIDS
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and tick borne diseases
  • Tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases
  • Fungal infections
  • Complicated pneumonia
  • Fevers of unknown origin
  • Suspected primary immunodeficiency
  • CNS infections including meningitis
  • Suspected travel-acquired and exotic infections
