FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care needs committed, caring volunteers who can be trusted to respect patient confidentiality in a variety of positions:
Patient/Family Volunteers
Provide companionship for lonely patients
Provide emotional support for patients, their caregivers and their families
Sit with patients for a few hours to allow a caregiver to take a break
Transport patients to and from appointments or errands
Run errands for patients/caregivers
Deliver supplies or medications
Install Lifeline Units for patients
Advanced opportunities requiring training and experience include:
LightKeeper Volunteers – to sit with patients who are actively dying
Bereavement Volunteers
To provide ongoing emotional support and companionship for a caregiver following the death of a patient
Special Project Volunteers
Shop for events or bereavement support group refreshments
Office Volunteers
Provide general administrative support for the FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care office.
Patient Family Volunteers (Inpatient Hospice House)
Provide companionship/ emotional support to patients/family members
Read to patients
Provide brief caregiver respite
Facilitate life review
Assist with light day-to-day patient support duties (i.e. delivering menus, flowers, reading materials, start laundry)
Receptionist Volunteers (Inpatient Hospice House)
Greet visitors
Provide emotional support to visitors
Assist visitors in navigating the common areas of the hospice house
Follow staff direction
Gift Shop Volunteers
Assist customers with selecting merchandise
Assist customers with purchasing merchandise
Stock/restock
FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care offers flexible, comprehensive training and work schedules for all volunteer positions.
To become a volunteer, individuals must complete an application and be interviewed by staff members. Our goal is to match the volunteer’s needs, experience and talents with the volunteer position that is right for him or her.
