Volunteer opportunities

FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care needs committed, caring volunteers who can be trusted to maintain professional boundaries and respect patient confidentiality.

Patient/Family Volunteers
Provide companionship for lonely patients
Provide emotional support for patients, their caregivers and their families
Sit with patients for a few hours to allow a caregiver to take a break
Transport patients to and from appointments or errands
Run errands for patients/caregivers
Deliver supplies or medications

Patient/Family Volunteers at the Hospice House
Provide companionship/ emotional support to patients/family members
Read to patients
Provide caregiver respite
Facilitate life review
Assist with light day-to-day patient support duties (i.e. deliver menus, flowers, reading materials; restock warmers & linen closets; assist with packet preparation)

Kitchen Volunteers at the Hospice House
Support Chef in an industrial kitchen during meal prep following applicable policies and procedures.
Gift Shop Volunteers
Assist customers with selecting merchandise
Assist customers with purchasing merchandise

Office Volunteers
Provide general administrative support for the FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care office with tasks targeted to volunteer interests and skill level.

Receptionist Volunteers at the Hospice House
Evening Shifts 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Greet visitors
Answer phones
Answer call bells
Provide emotional support to visitors
Assist visitors in navigating the common areas of the hospice house

Special Project Volunteers
Shop for events, bereavement support group refreshments, office supplies, hospice house supplies; deliver flowers; assist at periodic hospice events or community events.

Bereavement Volunteers
Provide ongoing emotional support and companionship for a family member/caregiver following the death of a patient.

LightKeeper Volunteers
Sit with patients who are actively dying.

FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care offers flexible, comprehensive training and work schedules for all volunteer positions. No prior experience is required.

To become a volunteer, individuals must complete an application and interview process.  Our goal is to match the volunteer’s needs, experience and talents with the volunteer position that is right for him/her.
