Introduction

The intent of the CAHPS Hospital Survey, also known as HCAHPS, is to provide a standardized survey instrument for measuring patient perspective on hospital care (e.g. patient satisfaction). HCAHPS stands for Hospital-Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey.

While FirstHealth of the Carolinas has collected data on patient satisfaction for many years, there was no national standard for collecting or publicly reporting this information that would enable valid comparisons to support consumer choice.

HCAHPS can be viewed as a core set of questions that can be combined with a customized set of hospital-specific items. The initial report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid is expected to be available in July 2007, at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.
