Volunteers augment patient and visitor services. They supplement the activities of the paid staff by relieving employees of duties not requiring professional training.
As volunteers participate in and observe activities, they have a greater appreciation of how the department functions in the health care process, the priority of patient needs and an understanding of the volunteer role. Once volunteers make a commitment to the department or service, continuity of service and development of trust and dependence between staff and volunteers is mutually gratifying.
Volunteer Services at FirstHealth
Each hospital has identified a department responsible for coordinating volunteer service. At Montgomery Memorial Hospital the Human Resources Coordinator is responsible for the volunteer program.
It is the responsibility of the volunteer program staff to interview each prospective volunteer in order to evaluate the volunteer’s needs and interests and then assign the volunteer to a suitable service area and provide adequate orientation, training and recognition.
