Carolina Neurosurgical Services

Larry Van Carson, M.D., FACS
Dr. Larry Van Carson, a Louisiana native, raised in Atlanta, Georgia received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia in Athens. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he subsequently completed his internship in surgery and residencies in neurological surgery and plastic surgery. During his neurosurgical residency, he received the prestigious Van Wagenen Resident Research Award at the 30 th Annual Congress of Neurological Surgeons for research on the effects of peripheral lesions on the cerebral cortex.

In addition to years spent in private practice, Dr. Carson has held faculty positions at East Tennessee State University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Medical College of Georgia and West Virginia University.

Dr. Carson is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Society of Aesthetic Surgery, and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Carson is a full-time faculty rank employee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Division of Neurosurgery. Dr. Carson maintains medical staff privileges at both UNC Hospital and FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.


Bruce P. Jaufmann, M.D., F.A.C.S Bruce P. Jaufmann, M.D., F.A.C.S
Dr. Jaufmann received his Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biology from the State University of New York in Albany. He then earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College of New York. He performed his internship in general surgery as well as his residency in neurological surgery at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.

Dr. Jaufmann served in the United States Air Force and was Chief of Neurosurgery at USAF Medical Center at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. Dr. Jaufmann is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

David B. Kee Jr., M.D.
Dr. Kee received his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience cum laude from Amherst College in Amherst, Mass. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., and subsequently completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at the Emory Clinic and affiliated hospitals of Emory University.

Upon completion of his training, Dr. Kee served as a military medical officer and Chief of Neurosurgery at USAF Medical Center at Kessler AFB in Biloxi, Miss., where he received the Air Force Commendation Medal.

After establishing the first neurosurgical practice in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and serving on the faculty of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Kee joined the FirstHealth neurosurgery program, Carolina Neurosurgical Services, to continue its growth into a Center of Excellence.

Dr. Kee is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Medical Association.

She performed her internship in general surgery as well as her residency in neurological surgery at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.
