The older you are, the more likely you are to have a stroke. If there is a history of stroke or diabetes in your family, you also are at higher risk.
Aside from age and heredity, the following are risk factors for stroke that can be controlled:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Heavy use of alcohol
- Stress
