Hearing loss affects one out of every 800 healthy newborns. Even a mild hearing loss can still cause problems in your child that may never improve. Hearing loss can lead to delayed speech and language development, social and emotional problems, and learning problems. The good news is that if hearing loss is found early, it can be treated.
FirstHealth uses the Natus Algo-II hearing screening tool to check babies for hearing loss. A set of disposable earphones are placed on the baby’s ears, and he/she will hear thousands of soft, clicking sounds. Tiny electrodes that detect brain waves are attached to the baby’s head. If the screening shows that the baby may have hearing loss, a nurse will
provide information on possible treatment options.
