Mammography
Mammograms are probably the most important tool doctors have to help them diagnose, evaluate, and follow women who've had breast cancer. Mammograms don't prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible.
Quick facts about Mammography…
- Mammography is a low-dose x-ray examination that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt
- Mammography is the single most effective method of early detection
- On average, mammography will detect about 80% – 90% of breast cancers in women without symptoms
- Women over 40 should have an annual mammogram for the duration of their life
- Screening Mammography is an x-ray examination of the breasts with no known breast problems
- Diagnostic mammography is an x-ray examination of the breast(s) with a known problem such as a lump, pain, nipple discharge or thickening, or any unusual changes in the breasts
- A diagnostic mammogram involves various images of the breasts to rule-out breast cancer or clarify a suspicious area of the breast
FirstHealth uses digital mammography where images are displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor and transmitted and stored just like computer files. Digital mammograms produce images that appear on the technologist’s monitor in a matter of seconds. Digital mammograms produce high quality images with excellent visualization of breast tissue to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. With digital mammography, the radiologist uses special high-resolution monitors to review the electronic images of the breast. The physician can adjust the brightness, change contrast and zoom in for close-ups of specific areas of interest.
