Learning that you have diabetes is never good news. Even though there is no cure for diabetes, you can continue to lead a healthy, active lifestyle with proper management, care and support. Treatment options vary from person to person, but the main goal is always to improve your health and help you to maintain your normal lifestyle. Some treatment options include meal planning guidelines, regular exercise, and oral medication or insulin injections.

The FirstHealth Diabetes Self-Management Program offers one-on-one counseling and group classes to help patients understand their disease. Patients benefit from time with both a nurse and dietitian as well as group classes and follow-up sessions when needed.

Topics covered include basic facts about diabetes, meal planning, exercise, medication, complications and foot care. Participants also learn how to read and understand food labels. The FirstHealth Diabetes Self-Management Program is an American Diabetes Association-accredited educational series offering services in Moore and Richmond counties. All of the program’s staff specialize in diabetes education.

The program is designed for people who:

  • Have been recently diagnosed
  • Have diabetes but have never participated in an education program
  • Have difficulty controlling their blood sugar levels or
  • May be suffering from diabetes-related complications

One-on-one instruction on self-monitoring, insulin injection and management of diabetes during pregnancy is also available.
