Letter from the Medical Director As a radiation oncologist, it is my privilege to meet individuals every day who are facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. They are young and old. They come from a variety of backgrounds. They are engineers, postal workers, teachers, homemakers and custodians. Each of them has a story to tell. Together, they are the face of cancer. Since 2004, I have had the honor of serving as the medical director of the Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Oncology Service Line at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. At FirstHealth, we are committed to remaining at the forefront, and I am pleased to be able to play a leadership role in the effort. In just three short years, we have taken tremendous strides globally and locally in caring for patients with cancer. Through continued research and scientific study, our knowledge about cancer is rapidly advancing. This opens new opportunities to expand and improve our existing programs as well as to introduce initiatives to better the health of our community as it relates to cancer. Our Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center provides both inpatient and outpatient services as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and innovative treatment technologies. Perhaps most importantly, however, FirstHealth recognizes that treating cancer is ultimately about caring for people. Through programs that reach out to families in crisis and educational opportunities promoting awareness and early detection, FirstHealth offers a personal connection that is unique in the health care industry. As you read through the pages in this document, you will learn first hand about some of the many developments in cancer care at FirstHealth during the last 12 months.
