New Medical Oncologists

In the fight against cancer, technology and research are simply tools. The true driving force behind excellence in diagnosis and treatment is the oncology physician. During 2007, FirstHealth added two hematology/oncology specialists to its team.

Mark D. Kochenderfer, M.D., worked with cancer patients during a medical school rotation and quickly learned that he enjoyed both the people and the challenges associated with their care. A native of Elkins, W. Va., Dr. Kochenderfer earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Medicine in 1999. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Before joining Pinehurst Medical Clinic and FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Dr. Kochenderfer spent two years as an assistant professor of medicine at the Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.

Robert A. Pohlmeyer, M.D., earned a B.S. from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, before attending medical school at Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Wake Forest University prior to joining the staff at FirstHealth. Dr. Pohlmeyer is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.
