The Esophageal Center

Encouraging medical professionals to combine their expertise, the FirstHealth Specialty Centers strive to improve patient outcomes and effectively educate the community. Together, these organized groups of medical specialists coordinate care for patients in a single setting.

Imagine transforming a mega-mall into a highly specialized community shopping center. With just one visit, you could expect to purchase everything you needed for a specific situation. During the spring of 2007, the FirstHealth Esophageal Center joined the Chest Center of the Carolinas, the Pain Center and the Infectious Diseases Center in the newly re-designed Specialty Care Centers Building.

The Esophageal Center offers a team of gastrointestinal specialists, speech pathologists, general and thoracic surgeons, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) physicians. Most often, the center treats individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or reflux in the larynx and pharynx (LPR). Physicians also see patients with cancers of the esophagus, swallowing disorders, esophagitis, dysphagia, achalasia, pediatric GI issues and noncardiac chest pain.

The center offers an array of diagnostic studies including Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), EGD with dilatation, stretta, impendance studies, esophageal ultrasound, LPR and manometry.
