“HDR in a Box”

The new HDR (high dose rate brachytherapy) suite at FirstHealth of the Carolinas is more commonly known as “HDR in a box.” HDR is often used to treat prostate, breast, lung and gynecological cancers.

Because radiation must be delivered in carefully managed environments requiring lead walls, moving or rearranging a radiation therapy room can present a challenge. That’s why when FirstHealth created the new suite, it developed a unique system in order to provide more options for the future. Imagine a room made from lead LegoTM building blocks. The blocks create a secure environment for the delivery of HDR therapy and have the added advantage of mobility that gives the staff the opportunity to provide the service virtually anywhere the blocks can be arranged.

“HDR in a box” is unique to FirstHealth.
