Overview

• FirstHealth of the Carolinas is a private, non-governmental, not-for-profit health care network serving 15 counties in the mid-Carolinas.
• Our purpose is to care for people. Values are Focus on Quality and Excellence. Integrity. Respect for the Individual. Service to Others. Teamwork. The 2020 Vision is Working Together, First in Quality, First in Health.
• Twenty volunteer board members from Moore, Montgomery, Richmond and Scotland counties govern FirstHealth; there are also six entity boards.

Organization

• Three hospitals with 559 licensed beds, rehabilitation center, skilled nursing facility, three sleep disorders centers, three dental clinics, seven family care centers, six fitness centers, a laundry, four charitable foundations, a Hospice program, home health services and an insurance plan.
• Critical care transport, EMS and medical transport services.

Medical Services

• All major medical and surgical specialties and numerous subspecialties, including open heart surgery, neurosurgery, bariatric surgery and neonatology.
• FirstHealth hospitals have an active medical staff of 270; in excess of 90 percent are board certified. The hospitals hold all major accreditations.
• Awards received to date in 2008 include HealthGrades awards for Orthopaedic Surgery Excellence Award, Superior Clinical Performance in Cardiac Care and Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety. In 2007 HealthGrades awarded Moore Regional Hospital with Five Stars for Cardiac Care and Vascular Surgery as well as the Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery, Joint Replacement and General Surgery. In 2006 Moore Regional was designated as a National Magnet Hospital and received the NCAfE Advancement Award Level 3.

Community Benefits

• More than 147,000 employee hours were contributed toward community benefit activities in 2007 with a total community benefit contribution of $28 million.
• More than $27,381,400 was provided in charity care and 764 people were assisted with enrolling in public assistance programs. FirstHealth Community Benefits include a mobile health van; dental health programs in Moore, Montgomery and Hoke counties; school health programs in Moore and Montgomery counties; a tobacco use prevention and cessation program; transportation services; a medication assistance program; and a language interpreter program.
• More than 770 volunteers contributed 84,605 hours during 2007 to provide assistance at hospitals, Hospice and other FirstHealth entities.

Financial and Other Statistics

• AA credit rating by all rating agencies.
• Discharges (excluding newborn) exceeded 26,180 in 2007 .
• Visits to FirstHealth Family Care Centers exceeded 58,000.
• Hospitals’ Emergency Department visits exceeded 99,260 .
• FirstCarolinaCare, FirstHealth’s insurance plan, serves more than 200 employers located in eight counties, covering more than 12,000 members.
• 4,013 employees; $ 205 million annual payroll and benefits in 2007.
• More than 24,500 patients were served by EMS in 2007.
• System-wide fleet of 139 vehicles, including 62 ambulances/emergency vehicles.
