Caring for Moore

FirstHealth’s Information Systems (IS) Department is working together with human service agencies in Moore County to communicate better with each other and to better meet the needs of people who come to them for assistance.

Dave Dillehunt, FirstHealth’s chief information officer, and Linda Briggs, director of IS applications support, have worked with a task force from the Sandhills/ Moore Coalition for Human Care to develop a database application that agencies can use to share information and streamline the process of referring clients from one agency to another.

The Coalition for Human Care is a non-profit organization that provides food, clothing and financial assistance to low-income residents of Moore County.

While other organizations in the area provide different types of assistance, they often serve many of the same people.

Currently, if someone goes to one agency for help and is referred to another agency, both agencies have to go through the process of recording the person’s name, address and other basic information, and finding out what his or her needs are. In many cases, the agencies have no way of knowing what, if any, services other agencies have already provided to that client.

The new database application, called Caring for Moore, is designed to speed up and improve information sharing and service delivery.

“It’s a tool to help simplify referrals from agency to agency,” Briggs says. “For example, if you go to the Coalition for Human Care and they determine that you could be best served by the food pantry, they can put all of your information into the database so that the food pantry can pull it up. They don’t have to get the same information from you and enter it again when you get there.”

According to Dillehunt, the new system—currently in the prototype stage—will allow one agency to let another agency know that a particular person is on the way and what that person’s needs are. One agency will also be able to print out for the client a description of the services provided by other agencies, along with maps and directions.

“So many people who need the kinds of assistance that these agencies provide have no idea what is offered in the community or how to access it,” Dillehunt says. “This will be a way to help them learn all about it at the first place they visit. The ultimate goal is to provide a coordinated service to people across a number of agencies.”
