PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Information Sheet

Purpose: To train pharmacy residents in a community hospital setting to become confident independent practitioners prepared to excel as a generalist clinician. In addition to our graduates possessing the knowledge and skill set to be valuable members of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, they will acquire a thorough understanding and appreciation for all aspects of the medication use process in a health-system setting.


  • Completion of application materials 
  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Eligibility for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of North Carolina


  • Approximately $45,000 salary
  • Benefits package equivalent to full-time employee with FirstHealth of the Carolinas
  • Travel allowances for professional meetings
    • ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (December)
    • Southeastern Regional Residency Conference (April)
    • North Carolina Association of Pharmacists Annual Convention (October)


  • Staff in a clinical, decentralized position every other weekend
  • Work one of two summer holidays (Memorial Day or Labor Day)
  • Work one of two winter holidays (Thanksgiving or Christmas)
  • Work a minimum of five night shifts (in addition to routine staffing requirements)

Residency Rotations
Required: General inpatient medicine (two months), Critical care (two months), Emergency Medicine (two months), Pharmacy Practice Management (longitudinal)

Electives: Oncology, Infectious Disease, Pharmacy Administration, Pharmacy Information Systems, Ambulatory Care (MTM in outpatient retail pharmacy)

Longitudinal: PN&T Committee, Medication Safety, Administration/Leadership
